KATAHDIN HAIR SHEEP

The Katahdin is a hardy, adaptable, low maintenance breed of sheep with a lean meaty carcass. They do not produce a wool fleece, so no shearing is required! The heavy coat they produce during cold winter sheds itself in the spring. They are highly adaptable to any climate: hot or cold, dry or humid. The ewes have very strong mothering instincts, lamb with ease, have consistent multiple births, and with proper nutritional management, will breed 'out of season'. Katahdins are docile, and gentle, so are easy to handle. Their high resistance to parasites and disease greatly decreases the amount of management attention compared to wool breeds. Their lean, meaty, carcass produces a very mild tasting meat. The meat is lower in fat and cholesterol than beef, pork, and wool sheep by almost 40 percent!

Generation 5 Farm offers both registered and commercial breeding stock and butcher lambs. Our sheep are in the USDA voluntary scrapie program. This ensures buyers they are getting top quality breeding stock and meat. Our breeding stock is represented in flocks all over the United States. Our butcher lambs are marketed nation-wide, as well.
